Calcium From Dairy Aids Weight Loss

Encourage patients with type 2 diabetes to include more calcium from dairy products if they are trying to lose weight. That's the consensus from a recent study appearing in Diabetes Care.

A diet rich in dairy calcium enhances weight loss in patients with type 2 diabetes and should be tried in patients with diabetes, particularly if a patient has difficulty sticking to other diets, researchers conclude. Results are based on a six-month randomized trial that assessed the effect of three types of diets in 259 patients with type 2 diabetes from the Clalit HMO in Rishon Lezion, Israel. The average body mass index for participants was >31 and the average age was 55, researchers note.

Participants were assigned either a mixed glycemic index carbohydrate diet, a low-glycemic index diet, or a modified Mediterranean diet. Participants were allowed to vary their daily consumption of low-fat dairy products. They recorded their daily intake in a dietary questionnaire. Other outcome measurements included weight, height, waist, and hip measurements taken at 0 and 6 months, as well as daily physical activity, including hours slept and activities at work, at home, and during the weekend.

Caregivers should consider potential adverse effects of increased dairy consumption in patients with prostate or breast cancer, the researchers warned. {blacksquare}
